Marc Joseph Pelchat

With heavy hearts, the family of Marc Joseph Pelchat of St. Edouard, Alberta, regretfully announce the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother on April 4, 2024 at the age of 91 years.

Marc Pelchat was born in Barraute, Quebec in 1932, one of 12 children. When he was 14, he left school and went to work at his dad’s sawmill. Eventually, with his dad’s blessing, he left to go out west and ended up working on a farm in Saskatchewan at harvest time. This is where he learned some English.

He ventured further West, to BC and worked at a sawmill near Prince George for a few years. In 1957 he came back to Alberta and bought his first quarter of land and a tractor in St. Edouard, Alberta. For the next two years, he would go back-and-forth to Quebec and visit with his future wife Yolande. He asked if she was willing to move out west if they got married.  She said yes and they were married on April 23, 1960. They developed their farm together starting out with two milk cows and 10 pigs. They had their first child in 1961 but, tragically, they lost her 7 months later. Though they were never able to completely put that behind them they persevered with resilience and strength of character.  Their family grew.  They increased the size of their farm deciding to focus mainly on dairy farming.  He helped build the church in St. Edouard and was also part of the Fish & Game Association and the Knights of Columbus. In 1995 they retired from milking cows and moved to their cabin at Chicken Lake.  That being too slow paced, they returned to St. Edouard into a new home and along with their grain farming, started a beef cow/calf operation. As the years passed, even though he couldn’t work as hard, he didn’t quit doing things. He enjoyed some trips to Mexico with his wife and friends, stoking the fire in his wood stove, quadding, playing cards, mowing the lawn and watching his grandkids and great grandkids.  Rest in peace, Marc, keep smiling and laughing like you did.

Marc will be forever remembered and loved by his wife of 64 years, Yolande Pelchat (née Faucher).

Children: Jude Pelchat (Val and Xander), Danielle (Kerry) Hope, Réal Pelchat, Louis Pelchat, Berthe Pelchat, Fernand (Carol-Lynn) Pelchat, and Eric Pelchat.

Grandchildren: Jamal, Novalie (Ricky), Francine, Aaron Joe (Vanessa), Sharayah (Lee), Emily (Jeff), Jill (Bryce), Adam, Christian, Janelle, Chase, Jérémi, Brianna, Madison.

Great grandchildren: Shayden, Axtynn, Dexxen, Harlynn, Shawn, Eva, Ahliyah, Nedeyah, Trey, Calla, Miguel, June and Bell.

Siblings: George, Lionel, Jean Claude, Jeanne, Henriette, Yvette, and Rosanne; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Marc was predeceased by his parents: Albert Pelchat and Marie Larose; daughter: Hélène; siblings: Lucien, Alexandre, Simone, and Rollande. 

The family would like to express a very special thank you to everyone who cared for Marc, especially the nursing staff at Elk Point Hospital and Dr. Fasola.

Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral, St. Paul, Alberta with Father André Semusambi as celebrant.

C’est avec le cœur lourd que la famille de Marc Joseph Pelchat de Saint-Édouard, en Alberta, annonce avec regret le décès de l’époux, père, grand-père, arrière-grand-père et frère bien-aimé, le 4 avril 2024, à l’âge de 91 ans.

Marc Pelchat est né à Barraute, au Québec, en 1932, dans une famille de 12 enfants. À l’âge de 14 ans, il quitte l’école et va travailler à la scierie de son père. Finalement, avec la bénédiction de son père, il est parti dans l’Ouest et a fini par travailler dans une ferme en Saskatchewan pour les récoltes. C’est là qu’il a appris un peu d’anglais.

Il s’est aventuré plus à l’ouest en Colombie-Britannique et a travaillé dans une scierie près de Prince George pendant quelques années. En 1957, il revient en Alberta et achète à Saint-Édouard son premier quart de terre et un tracteur. Pendant les deux années qui suivirent, il fait des allers-retours au Québec pour rendre visite à sa future épouse Yolande. Il lui a demandé si elle était prête à déménager dans l’Ouest s’ils se mariaient. Elle a dit oui et ils se sont mariés le 23 avril 1960. Ils ont développé leur ferme ensemble avec deux vaches laitières et 10 porcs. Ils ont eu leur premier enfant en 1961 mais, tragiquement, ils l’ont perdu 7 mois plus tard. Bien qu’ils n’aient jamais été en mesure de mettre cela complètement derrière eux, ils ont persévéré avec résilience et force de caractère. Leur famille s’est agrandie ainsi que leur ferme. Ils décidèrent de se concentrer principalement sur l’élevage laitier. 

ll a participé à la construction de l’église de Saint-Édouard et a également fait partie de la Fish & Game Association et des Chevaliers de Colomb. En 1995, ils ont cessé de traire les vaches et ont déménagé dans leur cabane à Chicken Lake. Comme le rythme était trop lent, ils sont retournés à Saint-Édouard dans une nouvelle maison et en plus de leur culture céréalière, ils ont démarré une exploitation de vaches et de veaux de boucherie. Au fil des ans, même s’il ne pouvait plus travailler aussi dur, il n’a pas cessé de s’occuper. Il aimait faire des voyages au Mexique avec sa femme et ses amis, allumer le feu dans son poêle à bois, faire du quadding, jouer aux cartes, tondre la pelouse et surveiller ses petits-enfants et ses arrière-petits-enfants.

Repose en paix, Marc, continue à sourire et à rire comme tu l’as toujours fait.

Marc restera à jamais dans nos mémoires et aimé par son épouse de 64 ans de vie commune, Yolande Pelchat (née Faucher).

 Ses frères et sœurs : Georges, Lionel, Jean-Claude, Jeanne, Henriette, Yvette et Rosanne  ainsi que plusieurs neveux, nièces, cousins, cousines.

 Marc fut précédé dans la tombe par ses parents : Albert Pelchat et Marie Larose, sa fille Hélène, ses frères et sœurs: Lucien, Alexandre, Simone et Rollande.

La famille tient à remercier tout particulièrement tous ceux qui ont pris soin de Marc, en particulier le personnel infirmier de l’Hôpital Elk Point et le Dr Fasola.

Messe des funérailles chrétiennes auront lieu jeudi 11 avril 2024 à 13h00 à la cathédrale St. Paul, St. Paul, Alberta par le père André Semusambi.
