Stewart Cardinal Obituary

Stewart Glen Cardinal 59 years old (April 4, 1963 - Informed February 6th, Announced February 7th)

With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Stewart Glen Cardinal, a true spirit of the wild northern prairies, whose journey ended due to health complications as informed on February 6th, and announced on February 7th that he had passed away three days earlier. A survivor of the residential school system, Stewart's life was marked by his fierce independence and the untamed spirit of a free-roaming wild prairie horse.

Raised by their devoted grandmother, Eliza Cardinal, and her husband, Fred Cardinal, Stewart and his brother Randy grew up in an environment that, while simple, was rich in love and foundational strength. It was in the simplicity of this upbringing that Stewart's free spirit was encouraged, a trait that he carried throughout his life, even as he learned of the more complex nature of his family tree in later years that brand him hardships.

Stewart leaves behind a legacy through his immediate family: sons Chase Cardinal (mother Lori Aulotte), Spencer Cardinal, and Tyrell Cardinal (mother Jeanie Cardinal, his first wife); his adored grandson, Calvin Cardinal, son of Tyrell. He is also mourned by his aunts Vivian Roller and Emelia Pasquayak and uncle Raymond G. Cardinal and remembered by his siblings through his natural mother, Lillian Matthews-Cardinal: Mary, Tom, and Joe Matthews. His life's story is further woven with the threads of his sisters Rachel Favel and the late Donna Favel; nephews Calvin, Michael, David (son of Rachel Favel); nieces Helen, Matashia, and Marie; and his late twin brothers, Ronald and Donald, who became known to him as part of his wider family circle later in life.

In honoring Stewart's vast network of relationships, we also pay tribute to his cherished friendships with notable figures from his youth, such as Sam Cardinal and Floyd Cardinal, and his loyal friends Daryl and Tucker, who provided steadfast support in his later years. These relationships underscored the depth of connection Stewart formed, reflecting his unbridled spirit and capacity for friendship.

As we gather to bid farewell to Stewart, a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Old Onchaminahos School Gymnasium, Saddle Lake, AB on Monday, February 19th, with a one-day wake Sunday, February 18th, (leaving St. Paul Memento Funeral Chapel at 11:00 a.m.) to honor his wishes for a respectful send-off. This moment will serve as a reflection of his journey, characterized by the freedom and resilience that defined his existence.

In lieu of traditional remembrances, we invite contributions of stories, pictures, or mementos that encapsulate Stewart's spirit—a spirit as free and vibrant as the wind.

Stewart Glen Cardinal's rest marks the end of a journey lived on his own terms, leaving behind a legacy that speaks to the beauty and strength of living authentically. May his memory inspire us all to embrace the wild, untamed paths that lead to true freedom.
