Ruth passed away peacefully in the care of her family on Monday, July 18, 2022.
Left to cherish her memory are her 6 children: Brian Smith, Carol (Rene) Lefebvre, Barb Smith, Judy (Rick) Bayer, Debbie (Doug) Rarog, Bruce (Michelle) Smith, 14 grandchildren, (Brent Lefebvre, Brice Lefebvre, Lisa Lefebvre, Todd Lefebvre, Laura Ziober, Lana Zazelenchuk, Barry Ziober, Sheryl Kalinsky, Pam Bayer, Daniel Rarog, Brendan Rarog, Alyssa Mackowetsky, Blake Smith and Brady Smith) and 24 great-grandchildren. Ruth has another great grandchild as well as her first great-great grandchild due anytime now. She is also survived by her sister, Cathy Mattson.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Barry (JB) Smith on Monday, July 18, 2011; her granddaughter: Gianna Marie Rarog; her parents, Walter and Ora Bauer, and her siblings: A.J. Bauer, Isabelle Cornell, Shirley Otterman, and Ellie Matthews.
Ruth worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Ontario in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She met and married Barry, who was in the Canadian Air Force and began her life as a military wife.
Over the next 12 years, Ruth gave birth to 6 children: one in Germany, and five in four different provinces. Alberta was her home for the last 60 years, living in Edmonton, Cold Lake, and in the 'Castle on Crane'. Ruth and Barry also enjoyed spending many winters in Sun Lakes, Arizona.
Ruth volunteered with Cansurmount and the Cross Cancer Institute. She had a love of quilting and donated many of her lap quilts to chemo patients at the Cross. She lovingly sewed many wedding gowns and bridesmaids' dresses.
Ruth's happy place was the casino. She loved to play the slots and was always thrilled when she won.
The family has planned a celebration for Ruth at Hotel Dene and Conference Centre, Cold Lake, Alberta on August 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
