Richard (Dick) Charles Smith passed away peacefully in Bonnyville, Alberta on June 8, 2006 surrounded by his wife and three daughters. He was born in Craik, Saskatchewan August 18, 1914. Predeceased by his parents: Arthur & Beatrice Smith; brothers: Cyril, Edward, Albert; sisters: Lily Rigby, Grace Lowry, Marjorie Giles, Evelyn Smith; parents-in-law: Philip & Mary Hartl. He is survived by his loving wife, Elsie of Bonnyville, AB; daughters: Faye (Harold) Keating of Regina, SK, Elda (Don) Thackeray of Cold Lake, AB, Ina Smith of Cold Lake, AB; grandchildren: Richard (Dawn) Keating of Swift Current, SK, Kenda (Doug) Power of Regina, SK, Kari (Malcolm) Reid of Vernon, BC, Jeffrey (Teresa) Thackeray of Bonnyville, AB, Karla (André) Foisy of Bonnyville, AB, Kelly Ross of Hamilton, Bermuda, Allison Ross of Edmonton, AB; great grandchildren: Erin & Erica Keating, Nathan & Samuel Power, Sean, Liam & Roan Reid, Sydney & Scott Thackeray, Taylor, MacKena & Christian Foisy; brother: Harold (Ruth) Smith of Kingston, Ontario. He is also survived by his Hartl relatives - Edna (Jim) Hornett of Calgary, AB, Albert (Mary) Hartl of Raymore, SK, Rudy (Bea) Hartl of Abbotsford, BC, Bertha (Al) Kenny of Abbotsford, BC and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick taught school for 40 years in several Saskatchewan communities retiring in 1976 as Principal of Weyburn Comprehensive School. He was a long standing 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and the Royal Canadian Legion. Prayer Service was held on Friday, June 16, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Bonnyville, AB. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Bonnyville, AB on June 17, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Tributes in memory of Dick may be made to Haying in the 30's (in support of Cancer Care in NE Alberta), Box 35, Mallaig, AB T0A 2K0 or the Alzheimer Society, #134, 1935-32 Ave, NE Calgary, AB T2E 7C8.
