It is with deepest sadness that the family of Mariette Louise Wright of Bonnyville, Alberta announces her passing on Friday, November 26, 2021 at the age of 80 years.
Mariette Louise Brunet was born March 25,1941 in Bonnyville, Alberta. She was the second child of Louis and Marieange Brunet. Mariette’s older brother was Gus and her little sisters were Eva and Louise. The family moved around quite a bit when she was younger between the Bonnyville area and British Columbia.
Growing up Mariette kept busy with school and helping the family with the cooking, canning, ironing, and sewing (which would come in handy later in life). She enjoyed the singing and music her Dad, brother and friends would play.
Mariette was 15 when she met Albert Rowe, his blue eyes and smile caught her eye as she was watching him roller skate. The two started dating and they were married in 1957. Soon after, Annette was born and then in less than a year, Caroline arrived. These two were peas in a pod. In 1959 Albert Junior joined the family and two years later little Lina. It was a busy home with four rambunctious children. There was often an aunt or two living with them to help Mariette out as Albert Senior worked away from home.
Mariette loved gardening, flowers and berry picking. It was also a necessity in feeding the family. They would often go to grandpa and grandma Brunet’s to help them out with their garden or go blueberry picking and then go to the lake and swim as the children’s reward for picking. There are memories of going on family outings picking hazelnuts, hunting and fishing. There were many good days as a family but as time passed and the kids were getting older things began to change and eventually Mariette and Albert parted ways.
A few years later, Mariette met Ed Wright who was in the Air Force. Ed had three children: Margaret, John and Tina. In 1977 they were married and after living on the Air Force Base for a couple years they built their dream home in Holyoke were grandpa and grandma Brunet had lived. They got into exotic birds, raised many different animals and her garden was always amazing. Through this time period she was also excited to see the family growing as her children were married and started having babies of their own. Sadly in 1986, after nine years of marriage Ed passed away.
After a few years, Mariette chose to sell the house in Holyoke and built a home near Franchere. There she ventured into sheep farming. During this part of her life, she traveled many times to BC, Yukon and Alaska, visiting family in Northern BC and trying her luck at panning for gold.
As time went on, and as much as she loved the country, she knew it was time to move into town. She bought a duplex and moved into Bonnyville in 2006.
Moving into town didn’t slow her down. Her new companion was her gigantic cat Muffy. She kept herself busy with church, choir, making meat pies for the farmers market, and tending to her deck garden. Another activity she really loved was fishing with her sister Eva. She enjoyed playing Skip Bo, crocheting and coloring and was happy to serve in different positions on the condo association. She was also well known for being a great seamstress. But beyond all these things, we are certain her favorite past time, was bragging about her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren to all her clients and friends. She was one proud Grandma!
One of her great feats over the last few years was crocheting 62 blankets for all her kids, their spouses, grandkids, great grandkids and great, great grandkids. We are so thankful for these and they will be dearly treasured by all of us.
Over the last eight years Mariette had been struggling with heart issues which required many trips to the doctor and to Edmonton and lead to a reliance on oxygen. Last year was tough for her in many ways as her daughter Annette passed away and her body also began failing her more which required a move into Extendicare. Then on Friday, November 26, Mariette’s heart had beat its last and she passed from this world.
And so it is with great sadness we say goodbye to our dear mom, grandma, mamé, great grandma, good grandma, sister, cousin and friend. Her sweet treats, smile, laughter and hugs will be greatly missed.
